Four Pillars of Sustainable Rail

Thirteen materiality topics anchored across Safety, Environment, Social, and Governance — guiding every decision on our path to Net Zero by 2050.

— Where ERL Meets Sustainability

Four Pillars. Thirteen Materiality Topics.

Four (4) sustainability pillars have been identified for ERL to anchor our sustainability thrust namely Safety, Environmental, Social and Governance. Thirteen (13) materiality topics were identified to be of key importance to ERL.

— core value: Efficiency

Safety

Safety is the cornerstone of ERL's success. We nurture a work environment that prioritizes the well-being of every passenger, employee, and operational asset. Three materiality topics fall under this pillar: Employee Safety, Customer Safety, and Operational Safety.

3 Key Strategies

Improvement of Safety Protocols, Safety Regulation & Compliance, and equipping staff with Safety Training to ensure customer safety.

Improve Safety Regulation & Compliance to minimise the risk of workplace accidents and physical hazards — ensuring employee safety.

Modernisation of infrastructure technology of trains and tracks to minimise damage and improve overall operational safety.

— core value: responsiveness

Environment

4 Key Strategies

Develop a 3M Approach (Measurement, Management, Mitigation) — establish baseline data, strategic mitigation action plan, implement and report on carbon emissions.

Develop a Green Energy Management System and Energy Efficient System to lower costs and minimise climate change impact.

Develop a Waste Management System optimising 3R initiatives (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and minimising hazardous waste risk.

Develop a Water Conservation System to reduce operational costs and minimise the risk of water shortages.

Our sustainable practices tread lightly on the Earth. This pillar focuses on reducing carbon emissions, managing energy consumption and waste, and conserving water — all aligned with Malaysia's national aspiration to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

3 Key Strategies

Improve train condition, facilities, ticketing, and frontline service quality to ensure customer service satisfaction at an optimum level.

Enhance workplace diversity, equity and inclusion; promote cross-discipline competencies to retain and attract talent — strengthening human capital.

Enrich stakeholder relationships through CSR activities to strengthen ERL's reputation and maximise community impact.

— core value: inclusivity

Social

We invest in our people and the communities we serve. This pillar focuses on elevating customer service satisfaction, developing our human capital, and creating a meaningful positive impact on the wider community — building ERL's reputation as a socially responsible organisation.

— core value: integrity

Governance

3 Key Strategies

Enhance corporate and product branding based on Business Ethics & Integrity to strengthen ERL's positive reputational impact.

Empower sustainable financial management and risk mitigation to strengthen Risk Management across all operations.

Reinforce Cybersecurity & Data Protection to enhance corporate image and minimise risk of business disruption, reputational damage, and revenue loss.

Guided by the highest ethical principles, this pillar ensures ERL operates with transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership. It covers Business Ethics & Integrity, Risk Management, and Cybersecurity & Data Protection — safeguarding the organisation and those who depend on it.
